Operation Sexy Body

Every so often I like to stray from the typical financial mumbo jumbo and write about some stuff I’m sure none of you really care about. As the title alludes, I am currently on a mission of utmost importance… getting sexified for my wedding.

The wedding is tenatively scheduled for August 8th, which leaves me with approximately 8 months to get totally ripped. Just like I got my financial life in order (or at least am trying to) I need to set up a game plan for Operation Sexy Body.

Fortunately my roommate is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach/Personal Trainer so if I need any help or resources he can whip my butt in to shape. I originally planned on joining a gym to help get in shape, but I’m just too darn frugal to pay for the membership (How many of you actually use your gym memberships consistently?). Plus my roomie has a bunch of workout supplies like free weights, pull up bars, bands, and a big giant rubber ball thingy.

Here’s what I think I will be looking to accomplish…

1) Run three to five miles three times per week

2) Be able to do 20 pullups

3) Work on a 6-pack, currently have a 2.5-pack 😉

4) Run 2 miles in under 14 minutes

5) Reach goal of 50 consecutive push ups

6) Not look like this guy…

You’ll notice I did not include a weight loss goal in my list. I’m 6’1 and weigh 175lbs so I am not overweight, so I don’t really need to drop weight as much as I just want to make sure I am lookin hot as H-E-double-hockey sticks come wedding day.

It’s one thing to have a stated goal to get in shape, it’s a whole other thing to actually do it. So mark my words bloggers, I WILL BE SEXIFIED BY AUGUST 8TH. Are you a sporadic worker-outer like myself? How frequently do you break a sweat? Do you practice what you preach when it comes to your health?

  1. Operation Sexy Body.. I like the name! Hahah. I'm currently on my own version of OSB.. 30-day Shred with the fierce Jillian Michaels herself (via DVD). 🙂

  2. If you want to get in better shape on general principles, that's one thing. But frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about this. She took you for who you are and knew what you looked like when you proposed.

  3. It takes discipline, young grasshoppa.

I am not motivated enough to do any workouts at home on my own. I need to go to the gym to get anything accomplished. That's why I go after work every weekday for 1-1.5 hours. It's a local gym and only $20 a month.

Good luck to you man, I hope you are a sexy beast in 8 months.

  4. I'm a gym rat – I'm there 5-6 times a week for sure. I love it. I'm an avid weight lifter – it makes me happy! I just wrote a post on Money Under 30 about how to get a gym membership on the cheap. I pay $12/month. But I understand if you want to pay zero per month, too. 🙂

Good luck!!! You can do it!!!

    • To Carrie: DANG $12/month?? I want to live in a cheap city!!!

To D. Ninja: Those are some sexy goals! I like it! Good luck!

  5. Good on you for taking on a personal fitness challenge. You can do it! It's great to have physical accomplishments as goals, as a healthy body will help you live your long and fulfilling life.

I'm a gym-rat too. But I use it. I've tried the workout at home approach and I'm just not motivated enough to do it. I need the reason to get there, and being there is social for me too. Plus, I can't afford all that equipment at home! I love me some weights.

It's not that expensive when I think about the long term benefits. I pay $30 a month and make room for it in my budget.

  6. Good luck dude! Since fitness is my part time gig, working out is a way of life for me.. and my gym membership is free!

I've been doing P90x lately, it's a pretty cool weight lifting routine you can do at home that's supposed to get you ripped in 90 days. The dude is kinda annoying.. and I'm glad I didn't actually pay for it (borrowed from a friend)

Since I teach I can't stick to the routine completely so I just do the 3 days of weight training, then do my own cardio thing… good luck!

    • A guy at work was doing the P90X thing too. You can actually see the results, but said you gotta stick with it and it gets really tough.

And definitely borrow the DVD or buy on craigslist/ebay for cheap.

  7. August 8th is a good day, happens to be my birthday! LOL. So congratulations and hope everything is good.

As for the training, gyms where I live have all around come down.. There's even a gym that is a $49 opening fee, and $10 a month with 24-hour access to it.

  8. OSMB…I love it! I am a sporadic work-out person and I also cannot bring myself to pay that much for a gym, so you're lucky to have a roomie that is willing to share that stuff with you. I believe you can do it, just keep the vision of you on August 8th in mind. And maybe the pic of that guy as motivation.

  9. I did P90X for two months before my wedding and I guess you can ask my wife if I achieved operation sexy body, but I felt confident in my look.

  10. 4x a week weight training for this girl, come hell or high water! 🙂

Crossfit.com is about $28 for the year… it might help. Lots of frugal, do-it-yourself ideas for fitness. Be prepared for soreness. Epsom salts are a godsend. And remember: Diet is about 80% of it. Maybe cut back on the burritos? 😉 Good luck!!

  11. I just joined Gold's Gym with a $14.99/mo fee and no contract. I made it my goal to consistently run and lift weights in 2010. I've been to the gym every day but one in the new year. I'm at the gym by around 5:30am and leave around 6:45 for work. For me, that was the only time that I could guarantee myself the time to do my daily workout. Good luck for the wedding!

  12. gosh, how does GF Ninja feel??? If you were my fiance, I would feel the need to workout even more. It’s a good thing you aren’t my fiance 🙂

Btw, I pay $28 a month for Bally’s membership. Junky gym but the classes are dece.

  13. I just started the 30 Day Shred DVD yesterday… I am not overweight and can run 2.5 miles without much effort – but this DVD kicks my butt! I am letting my gym membership expire next month – I only pay about $12 per month also since I have been a member for so long, but it's $12 per month that I don't have! I'd much rather run outdoors – even in the Oregon rain!

  14. Gyms bore me. Yawn. I cannot think of anything more unnatural when it comes to exercise.

I ride my bicycle to work just about every day. This winter I've been riding in the cold and the dark and loving every minute of it. It's 8 miles each direction, about 35 minutes each in the morning and the evening. It only extends my commute time by about 20 minutes each way, but I get an automatic workout in the process. Could you incorporate something like that into your daily routine?

I also try to participate in cheap or free activities for recreation. Pickup games of ultimate frisbee, hiking in the mountains, and so on. I'm in great shape and I never, ever sit on an elliptical machine or lift a free weight.

  15. I can't wait until my foot is all the way better so that I can get back on the treadmill. It's mostly healed, but since the ligament was actually torn I REALLY don't want to mess it up again. At least I get in some walking. I've been lifting a little, which feels good.

Sounds like you don't need to lose weight at all, but working out feels good, and the sexy body is a great payoff. 🙂

  16. I love the gym! But I go to classes & am basically in love with them, so for me it's easy. I go to kickboxing and yoga 3-4x per week. Also, I bought my 2-year membership at Costco for $300 up-front, which comes out to $12.50/month. (Before I bought my gym membership, I had a few workout DVDs that I would do.)

Most of my friends run, have gym memberships or do nothing at all. One of my roommates did P90X and it definitely worked for him!

Good luck & let us know how it goes! 🙂
