I have a confession. I suck. Bad. Over the last few months I have totally lost sight of what is important when it comes to blogging, and that my friends is you, the readers (insert cheesy love song here). I’ve done a pretty crappy job engaging with the very people that keep Punch Debt In The Face thriving. A crappy enough job, that I got a pretty gnarly (but deserved) email from a loyal follower. If I lived on the streets of Compton I believe the correct term would be, I got served!

While it may not have been the most fun email I’ve ever received, it was definitely something I needed to hear. I am absolutely, positively, 97% guilty of being a quasi-jerkface.

There are a few areas specifically that I want to work on redeeming myself in…

Commenting:

Did you know I read EVERY SINGLE comment I get here on PDITF? Not one slips past me. I live for comments. It’s really my only metric by which I can gauge whether a post was intriguing or a big fat waste of time. I try and use each article as a platform for further conversation in the commenting section below. Only problem is, the conversation is one way. I‘ve totally dropped the ball when it comes to responding to your comments. While I wont pretend I’m going to respond to every comment I get, I can promise you this, I’m going to do a less sucky job of responding to your comments. Hopefully this will stimulate some more thoughtful conversations following each article.

Commenting:

Wait? Didn’t I just talk about commenting? Yup, this commenting thing works two ways. Not only do I need to do a better job commenting on PDITF, but I need to be more intentional about commenting on some of my PF BFF’s blogs. I’ve read some great articles over the last few weeks, but never let the authors know that. I mean, how lame is that? I gauge a posts popularity by the number of comments it gets, so other bloggers probably do the same. If I don’t comment on the articles I really enjoyed, how is the other blogger ever going to know I want more articles like that? Answer: They wont! If you are a “lurker” (one who reads articles but never comments), I encourage you to come out from hiding and start dropping comments like Puff Daddy drops a beat. Comments are like potato chips for us bloggers, you can’t have just one

Link Love:

Most PF bloggers do weekly roundups where they include links to their favorite articles across the PF blogosphere. I don’t. Why? Cause I’m selfish I guess. I probably wont be including a roundup each week of my favorite reads, but I definitely plan to start linking to some of the content I come across that is top notch. Let’s get this party started then, shall we? A pretty interesting post is up at Financial Samurai about why renters should pay more taxes.

Reading more PF blogs:

I started blogging after getting addicted to a bunch of other PF blogs. I was reading 10 or so blogs religiously. But now, I’ve allowed myself to get in the way of myself and all I do is focus on my own ish. Selfish Ninja, very selfish ninja. So I’ve commited my weekend to setting up a Google Feed reader so I can subscribe to all you wonderful people’s blogs. It may take a little figuring out, but I’m sure it’s not too complicated. If you have a blog that you think is worth reading, drop me a line and I’ll be sure to check it out and add it to my reader.

Being more involved in the community:

I’m pretty excited about this one. I’m trying to be more intentional about building relationships with other bloggers. There are some wonderful networks out there that make this whole “blog dating” thing easy. I’m a PROUD member of the Yakezie network (the most powerful PF network in the world). I’m working on a collaborative Finance rap with Kevin at Thousand-aire.com. I may or may not be meeting up with some So Cal PF bloggers in a few weeks (deatils to come on this). Overall, I’m pretty excited about being an active member of the PF blogging community

So while I may have been a pretty sucky and selfish blogger over the last few months, know that I’m turning a new leaf. It’s time to DO SOMETHING and engage myself. Have you noticed my kind of selfish behavior? For other PFers out there, what do you do to stay involved?
